Poovathumkal temple is Swamiji's family temple beside his residence in Ponkunnam, Kottayam. Managed by Swamikal. People uaually associate a place of hindu worship with the common sights like mural paintings, sculptured figures, high walls etc. Devotees commonly accept this.

But Poovathumkal is a place of difference. It does not have the common picture of grandness that these temples usually have. It is a place of simplicity and austerity. Its sacredness become evident as one visits the place; devotees speak of refreshing feeling that passes over them, like a gentle breeze when they visit poovathumkal.

This is an amazing story associated with the beginning of the temple. Thesanctam sanctorum used to be a single piece of rock, inside swamikal’s ashram which had been worshiped from the time of his ancestors. The rock was considered sacred and the people used to adorn the rock with flowers. Hence the name Poovathumkal. Way back in 1983, Swamiji’s guru had insisted the rock to be removed and an idol of Lord Krishna be installed. When the work began earnestly, a hoard of golden jewels, golden lamps and other valuable materials were discovered underneath the sacred rock, to the amazement of swamiji and his followers. The discovery raised the question of ownership. Divine intervention was suggested as a means of solution. They revealed that it would be sacrilegious to remove the hoard of gold. So the idol was installed without removing them. Today the idol of Poovathumkal Sree Krishna rests on that vast treasure house of gold.
